Microsoft is planning to introduce a dark mode to its web mail service. While the software giant introduced a temporary dark mode for Halloween last year, Microsoft has been working on a new dark mode for for the past few months. Microsoft has started teasing that the new dark mode will be available soon.

“One reason for the delay is our insistence that we deliver the best Dark Mode of any leading email client (you’ll understand when you see it, I guarantee),” explains an team member in a feedback post. “The sneak preview you saw last year at Halloween was a prototype that required a lot more work to be ready for prime time.” Microsoft says it has redesigned the colors and code “multiple times,” and it’s in the final stretch of introducing the new theme in

A dark mode for is one of the most highly requested features for Microsoft’s web mail service, according to listings on the feedback site. Microsoft first introduced nearly six years ago as a replacement for its aging Hotmail web service, and it now has around 400 million active users. Microsoft has been tweaking its web mail service ever since with updated features, and a new design started rolling out back in March.

Dark mode all the things!

Yes and make it system wide with an option to trigger it automatically depending on ambient light! dream

depending on ambient light or custom preferences. Give me the option to choose ! (I’d always be on dark mode).

Sure, that’s why I said "with an option" – I know there are quite a few who would only have it in dark mode. In bright surroundings I’d personally still prefer the white view though.

Eugh, dark mode (anything) is horrible. As long as it’s only ever a choice though, that’s fine

Yes, this. Microsoft needs to add dark mode to SQL Server Management Studio. Going between that and Visual Studio hurts my eyes!

There’s a hidden one! It’s not perfect, but I can’t live without it. Looks like they’re working on it, but it’s not available yet out of the box.
Instructions here.

I’m so tired of web-based apps. CSS sucks.

CSS is awesome

lol! Thumbs up! I agree.

I want one

I upvoted because it was funny, but

word-break: break-all;

CSS is awesome

This was my pain for so many, many years.

And, The Verge, when? When Dark Mode on this site?
Come on! We are waiting!

Just use the minus spyware called Stylus.

What about dark mode for the ios app?

About time, although that really does not look very good.

What a world we live in, where "dark mode" for an app is considered a major feature.

Honestly, I don’t give a shit about dark mode.

What I do care about is Microsoft not including features in O365 that were in previous non-cloud versions of Outlook. The Microsoft Feedback forums are chock full of heavily-upvoted requests for old features.

This "tease" is a bait and switch to draw you away from the fact that the Outlook web app is still feature-barren when compared with the desktop version.
