Skype calling is coming to Amazon’s Alexa devices

Microsoft and Amazon are continuing their close partnership by bringing Skype calling to Alexa. Devices like Amazon’s Echo range will be able to access Skype’s basic calling, and Alexa-powered hardware like the Echo Show will also include video calling support. You’ll also be able to use Skype to call mobile and landlines using SkypeOut, and simply say “Alexa, call Bob on Skype” to activate a call.

Skype calling on Alexa will be available “later this year,” says Microsoft, and it follows a preview of Alexa and Cortana integration that’s available across Echo devices, Xbox One, and Windows 10 PCs. Microsoft and Amazon first partnered together for Alexa and Cortana last year, and it’s clear from this Skype calling effort that both companies are continuing to work closely. “We’re excited to continue bringing the best of Microsoft and Amazon together,” says Gaurav Sareen, corporate vice president for Microsoft.

This is bizarre and something I dont understand. They are top 2 cloud players slugging it out for every single customer and every possible space and on the other hand we see partnerships like this?

I just dont understand

MS isn’t competing with Echo. Cortana has been (re)focused on work related stuff. The alternative is to have Skype (and other stuff) even more irrelevant.
So the only thing MS can do here is open wide and let Amazon penetrate.

You don’t have to compete on everything. The alternative is a negative for both. Amazon trying to make their own callingservice nobody uses, and for MS to see Skype shrink even more.

Amazon and Microsoft both missed out on the great mobile communications revolution which has been dominated by Apple and Facebook and to a slightly lesser extent Google who still own the biggest mobile platform. This is their chance to increase their respective messaging ecosystem footprint and keep Skype from shrinking and grow the Alexa messaging platform. Focusing on interoperability is a good business decision, I might actually use my echo spot video call function outside dropping into my own house as I still have quite a few people on my Skype contact list.

The new Microsoft is like this…

Nice, might we also see an Echo/Alexa conferencing device (a la Polycom) using Skype?
