Sonic is living in a gangsta’s paradise

Well, it’s here. Whether you’ve been looking forward to it, dreading it, or just wish it was all a bad dream, the first trailer for the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie has arrived.

The trailer is light on plot details, but it basically looks like a traditional Sonic story, with the titular blue hedgehog (voiced by Ben Schwartz of Parks and Recreation fame) battle his longtime nemesis, Doctor Robotnik (Jim Carrey). “Basically, it looks like I’m going to have to save your planet,” explains Sonic, who may be an alien? It’s not clear. Equally bizarre is the trailer’s choice of soundtrack, Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise,” which is, of course, the first song everyone associates with Sonic.

Westworld actor James Marsden will play Tom Wachowski, the recently appointed sheriff of Green Hills (yes, like Green Hill Zone). The newly created character in the Sonic oeuvre will team up with the speedy blue hedgehog.

The trailer seems less interested in focusing on Sonic (who, being a CGI character, probably has less finished footage to show off). Instead, it spends most of its time on Carrey’s unhinged take on Robotnik, who apparently is an independent contractor to the United States military who is hired to help take down Sonic for reasons that are not made entirely clear at this stage.

If you’re afraid that Robotnik isn’t, well, Robotnik-y enough, the trailer also gives us a quick look at Carrey’s final form as the character, complete with the red goggles, bald pate, and iconic mustache.

Sonic the Hedgehog will hit theaters on November 8th.
