Apple releases Chrome extension for iCloud passwords

Apple has released an official extension for the Windows and Mac versions of Chrome that lets you use passwords stored in your iCloud Keychain. For anyone who uses Chrome as their browser and iCloud Keychain in lieu of a dedicated password manager, this could make bouncing between Windows and Mac computers much easier.

The release of the extension means that if you’ve used Safari to automatically generate strong passwords on other platforms, those can now be available to you in Chrome when you’re prompted for a login. Passwords created in Chrome for Windows will also sync back to iCloud so they’ll be available on Apple devices as well.

The extension is called iCloud Passwords and is available now in the Chrome Web Store. Details of the functionality were prematurely revealed last week in an update for the iCloud Windows 10 app, which listed “Support for iCloud Passwords Chrome Extension” as a new feature, despite the extension not having been released or otherwise announced.

Wow! This is awesome. Never expected Apple to do anything that resembles supporting a competitor’s product.

Think of it as "Apple trying to undermine all these multi-platform password managers that exist"

This benefits their users, which I appreciate. If I’m stuck using Chrome at work then it’s great that Apple is enhancing my security by allowing me to use my Keychain rather than copy & pasting passwords into Chrome, or making a duplicate set of credentials in the Chrome password manager, etc.

Anyway, Apple has long supported iCloud on Windows and even Apple Music on Android. They make strategic moves onto other platforms when it makes sense to do so.

It isn’t like they haven’t had iTunes and iCloud for Windows, Apple TV for several TVs and set top boxes and Apple Music for Android for ages

Apple has had Apple Music on Android since… 2015, I think? It’s rare, but Apple does occasionally do stuff like that.

Although I am very happy that this has finally arrived it should be noted that based on current reviews and my own experience it does not appear to be working.

Yeah, I can’t get it to work. That is it say, it just doesn’t work.

Chances of a rogue extension/spyware crawling through the keychain?

You must be fun at parties.

None? Extensions are sandboxed. This is exactly how lastpass etc work already. I’d worry more about fake extensions phishing for your apple password. Chrome store is a cesspool.

I don’t really understand the tech of it but chrome extensions and edge extensions have been removed in recent past for hosting malwares.

Ya, if you "don’t understand the tech of it" maybe it doesn’t make sense to comment. The way that happens is bec the developer uploads a malicious extension (or more often the OG dev sells his extension to someone malicious who does it). If we need to be worried about Apple doing that we have bigger problems.

Well yeah that makes sense.

Freaking finally ….

now do the same thing for android.

Initially excited but massive barrier for usability is that to work to requires an install of the iCloud desktop app for windows, which I wont be able to do on my work computer. So LastPass it is still.

Can they please also update their icloud bookmarks plugin for chrome? It has been broken since years now, last updated in 2017 iirc.

This is great news. I am pretty deep in the Apple ecosystem (by choice and happily) but it always got annoying that my one PC didn’t have iCloud Keychain as all my services now hove the long complex/unique passwords it generates. So manually reading the password off my phone and then typing it into the PC.

Are you sure it is supposed to work in Mac Chrome? The developer description only mentions Windows, and it doesn’t seem to work on my Mac.

Apple has released an official extension for the Windows and Mac versions of Chrome that lets you use passwords stored in your iCloud Keychain.

Not for Mac version of Chrome.

Would be great if I could get this to work. It keeps telling me to install icloud…which is installed. I even uninstalled and reinstalled. Checked for updates and restarted my laptop, no dice

Switched over to Microsoft Authenticator from iCloud Keychain, works on my Android devices as well. Rather put all my passwords in something that is platform agnostic.

Still nice that they finally added this. Let’s see if they add Android support in the future.

Microsoft Authenticator can store accounts/passwords not just 2FA?

Yes and it syncs credentials across Windows/MacOS, iOS and Android devices via Edge Chromium & Google Chrome.

Also based on the bad reviews of this iCloud extension, seems like a much better option.
