The Grand Theft Auto trilogy is getting remastered for PC and consoles, including Nintendo Switch

After several rumors, Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas are each getting HD remasters. They’ll be released in a package called Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition. The collection is coming to PC (via the Rockstar Games Launcher), PlayStation, Xbox, and, more surprisingly, the Nintendo Switch will host them, too. It will come to iOS and Android in the first half of 2022. Pricing and release date info hasn’t been shared.

The company hasn’t explicitly mentioned what kind of technical improvements were made, nor has it shared any footage yet. But it says that each of the games has gotten “across-the-board upgrades including graphical improvements and modern gameplay enhancements.” The company chose to take the faithful route for its remasters, leaving “the classic look and feel of the originals” how they were presented on PS2.

In case you’re someone who grew up with Grand Theft Auto V (understandable, given it is eight years old) and haven’t had an easy way to play these earlier influential games, this seems like a great time to jump in. It might feel weird to play a Grand Theft Auto game that doesn’t let you swap between protagonists, but the adventures of Claude, the silent protagonist in GTA III; Tommy Vercetti in Vice City; and CJ in San Andreas are still very much worth playing.

Rockstar says that we’ll find out more about the collection of games in the coming weeks. But ahead of the launch, it’ll begin removing existing versions of each title from digital storefronts next week, so pick those up if you want them before you no longer have a chance.

The mods out there are the best! Plus they have the original soundtracks.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition – The GOTY Edition – The Director’s Cut

- The Extended Cut – The Version You’ve Never Seen – The Infinity Saga – GTA Reloaded – GTA Revolutions – The Final Cut – The Last GTA

And of course, how could we forget…

Remember when Rockstar used to make games?

Given we’ve had GTA V for so long and now remasters of these three, I can only hope we get a new city (or cities) for GTA VI. Take us somewhere new or allow travel between multiple locations! I had seen a rumour about Vice City and a fictional Rio de Janeiro that you would travel between. I just want something completely fresh. I’m afraid another GTA in Los Santos or New York will feel too familiar.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was amazing. Quality over Quantity.

they probably don’t know how tell any other stories then about white bros, everything else is a supporting/nobody

Did you play San Andreas? CJ was black, and the first part of the game was about neighborhood life. The story was based around the Rodney King murder. I was a kid at the time, and didn’t understand what happened – in my defence, I live on the other side of the Atlantic. Years later, the game introduced me to C.R.A.S.H, which I thought was exaggerated, until I looked it up.

Good detail otherwise, but Rodney King wasn’t murdered. He was beaten by the police in 1991, but he actually died in 2012.

Yeah….. Those was ‘dem good ol’ days….

Considering the fact that they’re releasing HUGE games every few years that you can play for years (story mode + side missions can take months to complete and multiple gives you even more time) you can’t really say that they don’t make games.

I can’t tell if you’re joking. They released GTAV in 2013 and RDR2 in 2018… and that’s it.

This is cool but I’m ready for GTA VI

You will get GTA V and you will like it- Rockstar

more like your ready for GTA V!

I’m ready for some hot coffee!!!

Seriously, who’s asking for this?

Everyone : We want GTA VI
Rockstar : Remasters it is!

Vice City is the game of my childhood – the only game I remember vividly from that time.

Metroid Prime, Warcraft 3, Windwaker. There were some good games I remember playing in 2002.

2004 though was a great year of the sequels, Prime 2, WoW, Halo 2, Doom 3, Half Life 2, CS Source, San Andreas, etc

I hope the modern enhancements means they change the shooting controls to be more like GTA IV and V. Anyway, I’m probably going to end up buying this version three times, on PC, on XBOX, and on iOS.

Instant buy for me! These games mean so much to me

Would buy this for SA alone, but I’ll wait to find out just how butchered the licenced music ends up.

I’ve asked about this!
