Discord will block NSFW servers on iOS

Discord is amping up its restrictions on adult content, with new age gates on NSFW servers and a ban on accessing these servers from iOS devices.

Entire servers can now be marked as NSFW if their community “is organized around NSFW themes or if the majority of the server’s content is 18+.” This label will be a requirement going forward, and Discord will proactively mark servers as NSFW if they fail to self-identify. Discord previously allowed individual channels to be marked as NSFW and age-gated.

The NSFW marker does two things. First, it prevents anyone under the age of 18 from joining. But the bigger limitation is that it prevents NSFW servers from being accessed on iOS devices — a significant restriction that’s almost certainly meant to cater to Apple’s strict and often prudish rules around nudity in services distributed through the App Store. Tumblr infamously wiped porn from its entire platform in order to come into compliance with Apple’s rules.

At least some Discord users seem to be frustrated by the changes, judging by the reaction on Twitter. Several people tweeted that this could make them switch to Android. One said the restriction posed a problem for them since they needed to be able to monitor their server while mobile. The ban seems to be particularly concerning to art communities that include sexual illustrations.

Update April 19th, 10:05AM ET: Discord has now loosened its restrictions on NSFW servers on iOS, allowing some to be accessed via an opt-in toggle.

Several people tweeted that this could make them switch to Android.

Spoiler alert: they likely won’t.

do you really think they would exchange anime tiddies for an iphone? I press X to doubt.

press X to doubt.

It’s pronounced as Ten btw, not ex.

You can access discord in a browser on your phone no? It’s not as convenient but its there

I feel like there’ll be a work around. Much like how you can get past Apple’s content blocking on Telegram by logging into Telegram from the desktop client and setting the NSFW filter to off.

Apple: No nudity.
Also Apple: Our suppliers use child labor in China, and we glue our batteries in – bad for the environment.

Not to mention Uyghur slave labor in Xinjiang.

Once again moderation rears its ugly inconvenient head for another platform. The longer these major companies go without fundamentally addressing moderation on all their platforms the more draconian the measures will be. Twitter, Facebook and Discord need to moderate the illegal, racist and sexist behavior on their platforms so the 95% of normal users can enjoy their platforms. I don’t envy them as it is a tough problem in some instances, but these blanket guidelines that are enforced unevenly are driving users away and making their products worse.

american companies and their response to nudity are just embarrassing, especially in regard to female breasts. the sad part is that they impose their customs in the whole world.

This is the most unsavory part, Americans impose their stupidity upon everyone.

Remember when Apple changed the gun emoji to a water toy-gun and it ended gun violence in USA? Knives, and even grenade emojis are okay, but guns, oh no! Can’t have those.

Sony during the PS2 had tons of Japanese games which had anime….. uh, you know what I mean. But since Sony has become Americanized, games such as Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal are censored on PS4.

I am from India but I study in the USA, I like this country and vast majority of Americans have been nothing but kind. They are very good people, but they are not knowledgeable about countries not named USA. Most even behave as if US is the only country in the world lol.

You do know that female nipples (but not male nipples) rot the brain, don’t you?
Think of the children!
Oh, wait…

Steve Jobs really didn’t like porn, and it still shows!

Steve Jobs didn’t like a lot of things, including science. That dislike ended up killing him.

Damn dude, you are savage lol.

Steve Jobs was a controlling dickhead.

Sometimes I would love to ditch the apple ecosystem, on the other hand I simply don’t want to buy an android phone and sell my self to Google, even tho I do by using its search engine. I would love apple to be more open. And they should bring a dex alternative to iOS. Apple could make that a success.. Google, Samsung and even Microsoft simply failed here in my opinion.

Uh no Dex is really good so Samsung has not failed in that regard. Probably more of a useful utility than iPadOS at this point.

Have you ever used Dex? It’s very good, and the ability to have two independent display devices is very cool. Even wireless Dex is very good.

I game (GTA San Andreas, Bully, COD Mobile) on my gaming monitor via Dex, and have game guides and notes on my Tab S7. iPad OS is like a toy when compared to Dex lol, even though A12X is a monster.

you are right, my point was that they failed in selling it to the customers. Its not a feature that a lot of people are asking for so apple doenst feel the need to catch up on this.

This is more about discord not wanting to moderate NSFW communities properly. Discord has been on the App Store for a long time with no issues, but recently with the incidents involving Parler there has been more scrutiny on Discord as well. This is here is a nuclear option to avoid the prying eyes of Apple and nothing more.

Discord registered as 17+ on the iOS App Store less than a month ago.

https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500004241422—Recent-Update-Apple-App-Store-Age-Rating-Change

Since other social media apps haven’t had to take this nuclear option, this isn’t forced by Apple. This is Discord not wanting to register properly for their content and taking an artificial nuclear option to drop that age rating back down.

Yes, I think the article does not make this clear enough and thus people can think this is Apple’s fault.

From your link

A: Discord updated its age rating to 17+ at Apple’s request. We work hard to create robust controls and policies to help ensure minors are not exposed to content inappropriate for them.

Just sounds like Apple is more prude, which is the … factual take, correct or not. Discord always required people to age gate 18+ content. Not sure if anything would change.

Discord should be rated 17+. NSFW content is only self reported, and nothing prevents a 40 year old from reaching out to kids over DM. It’s an open platform, and it’s not well moderated.

Apple didn’t say they couldn’t exist; they just said they needed to be labelled appropriately.

You’re right, it probably should be treated like Twitter.
