This might be our first look at the rumored Alexa-equipped Sonos speaker

Caschys Blog

German blogger Carsten Knobloch says a reader sent him photos of the upcoming Sonos speaker that'll ship with Amazon's Alexa assistant built in. You can see it pictured above. Knobloch first published the images on his blog Caschys Blog. The leaked device lines up with what we already know about its UI.

An FCC filing for a device features the same play / pause button and microphone icons in the same layout as this leaked device.

Now, because this UI image has already been publicized, it's entirely possible someone just created a device that imagines what the new Sonos speaker could be. I also wish we had video footage of it lighting up with a blue ring to confirm Alexa support. Still, we can probably guess the new speaker will look just like the one above given that it's basically a Play:1 but with new controls on top.

The FCC filing also indicated that the device will support “multiple voice platforms and music services," which could mean support for not only Alexa, but also Google Assistant. Sonos is expected to unveil the smart assistant speaker at an event on October 4th.

Hopefully they continue to offer options without massive security and privacy risks.

Esssential

Yes, I am scared to death someone will take control of my Sonos system and play Kenny Rogers.

Hey if you want an always-on microphone connected to a monopoly at all times hanging out in your house to save you the atrocity of having to hit a couple buttons, you do you.

I would imagine this might just be a test unit to validate the new interface/microphone array. I can’t imagine them updating the Play:1 without adding the new speaker mesh design they’ve put on the new Play:5 and PlayBase.

Where is the firmware update to connect current echo’s to the sonos speakers?

I imagine that’ll come out next week after the announcement

Seems cool, but I assume it has the same limitations as the "Play" series of Sonos speakers and requires you to use their app. If so, no thanks. It’s hard to believe its still so difficult to find a solid wifi speaker without limitation.

You can use the Spotify app natively.

Or there is the new Sony Google Assistant Speaker that supports Casting and multi-room audio.

Unless you use Apple music, you should be sorted.

I use Apple Music.

Then you’ve tied yourself into a closed eco-system that’s reliant on one service provider.

HomePod will be great though I’m sure.

Leaking gadgets is becoming a whole industry… never thought I’d see a sonos leak

It’s October 4th alongside the Google event. Hopefully, this means that it will support both the Amazon Alexa and the Google Assistant.
