Plus, a surprised robot face on the back

HTC is hard at work on its next flagship phone, the U12 Plus, and now we’ve gotten our first good look at what the phone will look like, courtesy of a leak from Evan Blass over at VentureBeat. It’s hard to tell from the pictures if this is the same phone as the rumored U12 prototype that HTC showed off at a 5G event in Taiwan or if this is a different model.

The phone looks more or less like a major flagship smartphone in 2018 should — big, reduced bezel display, dual-camera system, and what seems to be similar design cues from the U12 Plus’s predecessors, the U11 and U11 Plus. Although, as my colleague Chris Welch points out, good luck not seeing the surprised robot face that the cameras, flash, and fingerprint sensor make on the back on the phone.

The specs for the U12 Plus leaked out earlier in March, when ROM developer Llabtoofer posted a list of specs on Twitter and also fall in line with what you’d expect from a major Android device. The U12 Plus is said to have a 6-inch LCD display with WQHD+ resolution and is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor with 6GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, along with a hefty 3,420mAh battery. Notable is HTC’s return to dual cameras in a big way. The U12 Plus packs a 12-megapixel sensor and 16-megapixel sensor on the back of the phone along with two 8-megapixel sensors on the front. IP68 water and dust resistance and Android Oreo round out the list, for what sounds like a pretty great phone on paper.

According to VentureBeat, HTC is pushing back the release of the U12 Plus until May as it deals with a minor snag in development, but presumably, we’ll find out more about the upcoming smartphone in the coming weeks as we get closer to the official release date.
