Shown as a "sneak peek" at Apple's 2013 WWDC, the Mac Pro is a major departure from the design of its predecessor which was in use for more than a decade. Instead of the large traditional tower shape, the Mac Pro for 2013 uses a significantly smaller cylindrical shape that utilizes a hollow core to blow air through the entire device. While it dwarfs the older Mac Pro towers, it still uses Intel's Xeon processors and has options for workstation–class GPUs.

After years of seemingly neglecting Apple’s most hardcore, highest-paying users, a 2012 email from Tim Cook finally gave people hope. Hope for the first truly rethought version of the Mac Pro since it was introduced in 2006. Hope that even as it had overhauled Final Cut to the dismay of so many of its most dedicated users, Apple still cared.
