Sony PlayStation 4

Verge Review

By Sean Hollister, Ross Miller, and David Pierce Seven years is a technological eternity. Yet the PlayStation 3 has sold well for that long, ever since DJ Fatman Scoop and Ludacris hosted its blowout launch event in New York City in 2006. At launch, the PlayStation 3 was big, heavy, and expensive — it took nearly two revisions and almost a dozen SKUs of PS3 to get Sony to 2013. The console now starts under $200, the controller rumbles, Blu-ray is the dominant physical disc format,...

The PlayStation 4 is the next gen console I decided to buy after intensive research about both next gen consoles.

    Design:
The Design is quite beautiful and special. It fits beautifully next to my TV and I was extremely suprised about the size of the machine. It's actually smaller than my PS3 Slim.
Also, the LED- stripe on top look pretty cool.

    Software:
Well, the OS on the PS4 does all I want. It's absolutely responsive and ultra-fast – the UI makes sense and is easy to use.
All features on the PS4 work as advertised, also the new Party mode is quite nice.
Over all, the OS and software is everything a game console needs.

    Game Selection:
Well, I think you cannot judge game selection yet. However I like the games that are on the system currently very much and I am looking forward to many titles.

    Controls:
I think I am in love with the Dualshock 4. It fits beautifuly in my hands, all buttons are great to use and I really like the innovative stuff they built into the contoller, such as the touch pad, the speaker and the AUX- input. By the way the AUX input is great for so many things. You can either push chat- audio through it only, or the whole system sound. And that's amazing, for example when you watch a Blu-ray, you can just plug your iPhone earpods to the controller and listen to the movie audio without disturbing anyone.
Overall; the controller is perfect for gaming and does alot of stuff more.

    Performance:
My PS4 works very well. I never had an issue with the software or games, not even a freeze or something alike.
In comparison to Microsoft's competitor, you can tell how good the performance is. Therefore full points.

    Heat/ Noise:
Even after intensive gaming for hours, the PS4 is not very noisy – especially when you compare it to the PS3 or Xbox 360.
Also, I never got an over heat or something alike – when you play, the PS4 is pretty much always at a good temperature.

I preordered the system and have been using it for nearly 3 months.

    The Good:
    - Snappy OS response with Hulu, Amazon Video, and Netflix a breeze to use. New OS is intuitive and makes for quick access to any part of the system while maintaining pleasing layout. Nothing feels buried.
    - Graphical horsepower to spare. Killzone and Assassin's Creed delivered a glimpse of next gen graphics. Resogun an awesome exclusive. Waterspouts in Assassin's creed were genuinely terrifying on a 110" screen.
    - New Dualshock controller redesign is extremely comfortable and much improved over PS3 version.
    - Playstation Plus a real value and already delivering free PS4 games.
    - Remote play delivers as promised and works surprisingly well.

    The Bad:
    - Attrocious controller battery life. 3-4 hours max during gameplay.
    - OS currently lacks DLNA or stored video support though Plex works well through the Internet browser.
    - Lack of launch titles though better than the PS2 and it's fireworks simulator.
    - Remote Play doesn't function with Amazon Video so you can't take your show to the restroom with your Vita.
    - Killzone a disappointment but redeemed by 2 amazing free games in Warframe and Resogun.

Overall I'm excited I went with the PS4 this gen. I was hedging and nearly bought the XBone. Having had the opportunity to play Call of Duty and Assassins Creed on both the horsepower advantage of the PS4 is noticeable in higher resolutions and better AA/volumetric effects. Lots of promise with the PS4.

I love the new PS4. It's Cool and fun, but of course there are things to work on while other partws are celebrated. I love the new controller on the vibrations and touchpad interface. I also love how much you can personalize your PS4.

On the other hand, I was disappointed with the lack of menu choices. They could've put a little more in for those who didn't buy a Playstation Camera. Also, I wish there were more games available for launch day.

Overall, I love it and hugely recommend it over Xbox One.

This is about a quick review as you're gonna see but here goes. I have this system and runs incredibly smooth once everything is updated. It's quiet and fast. 1080 graphics in multiplayer such as cod ghosts... Breathtaking to me. The new controller is perfect in every way. I love being able to run full gaming audio through the controller and use any headset of my choice and I can plug the controller in anywhere as it uses a micro USB port. It's only going to get better and better and the games will come. I love the fact they concentrated more on the gaming aspect then other stuff. No streaming device has been able to top my Apple TV and I already have a cable box. Great job sony with making a next gen GAMING console.
