Microsoft Xbox

Microsoft marched into the console space at Game Developers Conference 2000, where Bill Gates announced that his company was developing what would be known as Xbox. Upon its release in 2001, the original Xbox brought with it features that had to that point been reserved for full-fledged gaming PCs, including a hard drive for storage. The Xbox Live network was switched on in 2002, bringing multiplayer gaming to the living room and laying the foundation for what would serve as the backbone of the console's eventual successor, Xbox 360.
