If Apple can patent a paper bag, there's no reason a bun specially made to hold a hot dog wedged inside of a beef patty can't be patented, too. Mark Murray is the inventor of the Hamdog, and his "Combination hamburger and hot dog bread bun" was granted a US patent in 2009.
Here's the official patent image of the hamdog bun:
He first pitched his idea on Shark Tank Australia to a panel of unimpressed judges in 2015. Watch as the judges laugh in his face as he earnestly presents what is possibly one of the greatest county fair innovations of our time.
The audacity! But one year after his Shark Tank debut, Murray is now selling the Hamdog at fairs and markets in Australia.
"Everyone told me it wasn’t possible, because you’d need a patent lawyer and it would cost millions of dollars," Murray told news.com.au. "Even [Boost Juice founder and Shark Tank judge] Janine Allis told me that it was impossible to patent. She’ll be eating her words now." You know what she won't be eating? A delicious Hamdog.
Murray is currently looking for people to take on a Hamdog franchise. For $10,000, you can get your own Hamdog marquee and become a reseller. This is my personal plea to US entrepreneurs: please bring the Hamdog stateside so I can bring the party to my mouth.
