Outside of being for kids, I feel like this is a secondary device. I have a work issued laptop (I’ll call my primary device) then I have a personal Surface Pro 6 that I use for entertainment, paying bills, and other similar things.
If my Surface Pro died today, I would be happy to replace it with a Surface Go 3. There are cheaper alternatives but it’s something that will be used for years. The Go 3 checks all the boxes for me. I think there are plenty of people in a similar situation.

I have a Surface Pro 6 and a base iPad (2018).
You make a lot of good points. I think it really comes down to how you would use your devices. My Surface Pro is my "everyday" device at home. I use it for all my personal computing and entertainment needs. I usually keep the keyboard attached unless I’m using it to stream a show, then I will use it as a tablet. It’s a great device overall.
I treat my iPad as a travel device. Almost all the streaming apps allow downloads on the iPad (some do, some don’t for the Surface Pro). The iPad seems to work better as an offline device than the Surface Pro does.
I agree about the price issue. The Surface Pro 8 is very expensive for what you get. I’m curious if the SP8 will see the same type of Black Friday discounts that the previous version had.

Journal (by Microsoft, in the app store) is a great lightweight alternative to Goodnote and Notability.
