I agree that we wont be walking around with lightweight AR spectacles all day anytime soon but I don’t think this is what Apple is aiming at yet. I don’t think of it as a mobile phone replacement – more of a laptop replacement. If you can have the equivalent of two big screens floating in your view and it’s comfortable for 4-6 hours you could be far more productive than with a laptop on a train or in a hotel room. Seems like a feasible goal for Apple to aim for.

Does seem like the obvious solution but perhaps it’s not that simple. Maybe all phone batteries you can buy are thin and long (would make sense given all phones are now thin and big) and it would be expensive to make custom sized batteries?

Maybe it does make most sense for Tesla. There are so many EVs being sold now that it’s near inevitable that alternative charging networks will start catching up to Tesla. Why not open up the Tesla network and expand it? They’ve got that early advantage which could make them the dominant charging network.

The interesting thing is this seems to be a one way thing. I.e it doesn’t translate what the wearer is saying -just the other person. This limits (to some extent) the chances of embarrassment. Also the user isn’t just seeing the text from Google translate they’re seeing the persons facial expressions etc. which might help not miss some of those subtleties which make translating technologies difficult. I could see these being useful for someone who’s learning a new language and goes to visit a country where that language is spoken. However I reckon it would struggle A LOT with busy or noisy areas.

I think the choice of chip against camera makes it much more competitive with the iPhone SE. With the ultrawide and night sight this will be (at the very least) a more versatile camera than the SE. Having a half decent chip should mean you can use it comfortably for a few more years (although not as long as the SE).

Amazon is an interesting comparison. As far as hardware is concerned they’re quite prepared to do the whole throw it all at the wall and see what sticks (they seem to announce about 100 new products every year). But they also commit to stuff that works. How many times has the echo been updated since it was first released? The Google smart speakers have been updated once as far as I can tell.

USB-A is everywhere! If you’re going to take one charging cable it should have type A at the business end. I’ve traveled for weeks without having to worry about charging bricks or adaptors. You can always find USB-A round the back of a TV or under a train seat to charge off.

I’m pretty sure they’ll lean heavily into their ai smarts. Will be interesting to see what they come up with and whether it’s compelling.
