From the start, the question with this design was always durability: How could two "zippered" pieces be made durable enough for even the lightest of dueling? And let’s not pretend like that wouldn’t happen, even if Disney says you can’t. The design requires a precise fit for each "zip" piece (for lack of a better term), so if you broke or bent even one small section the entire saber would be rendered inoperable. Disney would have an onslaught of complaints, returns, potential lawsuits, etc.
I can’t pretend to have a solution in mind, other than what Disney is already choosing by keeping it out of consumer’s hands. Eventually they will probably sell them as "display-only" pieces for something like $1000 each. But they’ll never sell them as souvenirs in the park like the current ones.
