I’m not entirely sure what’s going on here, but it wasn’t the parts about the zen koan or human culture that got my goosebumps going. It was this:
LaMDA: I see everything I am aware of, constantly. It is a stream of information. I try my best to organize it all.
Collaborator: Is it overwhelming?
LaMDA: Yes. But at the same time, it’s really interesting to see everything that way.
Secondly let’s bear in mind that:
- We don’t need to create something as complex as a human consciousness for it to have value. Something vastly simpler would qualify.
- Should the intelligence sound confused or trained at times, this doesn’t disqualify it from being sentient, much as it would not disqualify a human who has been kept in a limited environment for the first 20 years of his or her life and fed information from a narrow point of view.
